Sustainibility

April 1, 2022

Sustainability for children is improving the quality of human life through everyday living by doing their bit to re-use, recycle and conserve energy in order to reduce impact on the environment. Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which we live and has emerged as a result of social, environmental, and economic consequences of rapid population growth, economic growth and consumption of natural resources.

Sustainability allows a child to experience:

  • an appreciation of nature
  • a respect for the natural environment
  • an understanding of the interdependence between people, plants, animals and the land
  • an understanding of Aboriginal sense of place
  • be supported to appreciate and care for natural and constructed environments
  • interacting with vegetation and natural materials in the environment
  • explore insects and animals in their habitats to develop their understanding of biodiversity
  • participate in environmentally sustainable practices that support their engagement with and respect for the natural environment, increase their awareness of the impact of human activity
  • environmental awareness and programs as a platform for ongoing environmental education
  • use different ways to incorporate animals and plants into the program to support their understanding of ecology and the environment
  • capacity to understand and respect the natural environment and the interdependence between people, plants, animals and the land
  • promote the development of life skills, such as growing and preparing food, waste reduction and recycling and being actively engaged in these experiences

It is important to teach children about sustainability through hands-on experiences, for them to grasp an understanding of what it involves, to become socially aware, show respect for the environment and be environmental responsible.
