The Queensland Government’s Free Kindy program is a great opportunity for children to develop the foundational skills they need to successfully transition into their schooling. As a parent, it’s natural to wonder, “When should I enrol my child in kindy?”
The Queensland Government’s Free Kindy program is for children who are four years old in the year before they start Prep (meaning they turn four by 30 June that year). That said, it’s often worth enrolling your little one early to secure a place with your preferred kindy provider.
Read on to learn more about when to enrol for kindy, including kindergarten age QLD, the enrolment process, and what to do if you miss the enrolment window.
How does the Queensland Government’s Free Kindy program work?
Under the Free Kindy program, eligible children can access 15 hours of kindergarten learning each week for 40 weeks a year, totalling 600 hours in a year. Every session is led by qualified early childhood teachers and is completely free at all Kids Early Learning Centres.
As a part-time program, Free Kindy can be delivered across two or three days a week, depending on the service provider.
What age is kindergarten in Queensland?
The Queensland Government’s Free Kindy program is available for children who turn four by the 30th of June in the year they start. This means that if your child turns 4 on 15 May 2026, they’ll start kindy in 2026. However, if they turn 4 on 15 August 2026, they’ll start in 2027 instead, as they would have missed the June 30 cutoff for the 2026 cohort.
If you’re still unsure about when your child should start kindy, you can use the kindy age calculator available on the Queensland Government website.
Why early enrolment matters
While many kindergarten providers accept enrolments year-round, spots can fill up quickly, especially in popular areas such as Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast. With this in mind, it’s often a good idea to enrol your child in kindy at least six months before the start of the kindy year to secure their spot.
Early enrolment improves your chances of securing a spot for your child in the kindy program at your preferred provider, but it’s also a great way to confirm your preferred days. Plus, there’s the added peace of mind that comes with knowing your child will have the best chance at a smooth transition to school.
Some childcare centres, like Kids ELC, often have long waitlists, so enrolling your child early helps avoid disappointment.
Key dates and deadlines for kindy enrolment in Queensland
While most centres open enrolments to their Free Kindy program between 12-18 months in advance, it’s often recommended you register your interest early as there can be waitlists.
The Government-subsidised Free Kindy program often aligns with the school year, meaning a January start date. However, some services also accept mid-year enrolments if spaces are available. The best way to check Free Kindy availability is to contact a centre directly.
How to enrol in kindy in Queensland
While each individual childcare provider will have their own enrolment process, you can generally follow these steps to get your child enrolled in the Free Kindy program:
- Step 1: Find and research government-approved kindergarten providers that are convenient to you. Many long-day care centres offer the Government’s Free Kindy program, but it’s also available in dedicated kindergarten services and some limited-hours care services.
- Step 2: Check your child’s age to ensure they’re eligible for the Free Kindy program.
- Step 3: Contact your preferred centre to check their availability and if they can accommodate the days you’d like your child to attend the Free Kindy program. If your child isn’t already enrolled at the service, it’s a great idea to book a tour to see the facilities for yourself and meet the team of early childhood teachers. If everything works out, they should be able to guide you on how to submit an enrolment application form and any supporting documents.
- Step 4: Prepare your child for kindy with on-site orientation sessions if they’re not already attending the childcare centre.
At Kids ELC, we provide guided enrolment support for families, especially when it comes to our Free Kindy program. Reach out to us if you have any questions about the Free Kindy program or book a tour at one of our centres.
What if you miss the enrolment window?
If you accidentally miss the enrolment window, late enrolments are sometimes possible if the centre has spots available. However, missing the main enrolment window can often mean fewer choices when it comes to locations and days.
Another important point to remember is that if you enrol your child in the Free Kindy program after it’s commenced for the year, your child will complete what remains of the program. Most service providers can’t make up for any lost kindy days.
If you find yourself in this situation, flexibility is key. Reach out to multiple centres in your area to gauge their availability and get your child enrolled ASAP.
